Marine Operations

SMNG owns a specialized fleet.

Deepwater seismic vessels:

Shallow water seismic vessel:

In Russia today it is the largest fleet of research vessels equipped with modern navigation and geophysical systems from leading world manufacturers. SMNG is steadily moving forward and reacts flexibly to the changing conditions of the marine geophysical services market, modernizing the fleet in accordance with its needs. The main priority of the company is the high quality of performance of all types of work in accordance with international industry standards.

SMNG has many years of experience providing a full range of services for 2D and 3D marine seismic acquisitions, including operations in deep and shallow waters worldwide, as well as in transition zones. The operations are conducted in different climatic and geographical conditions. SMNG was generally recognized in the Russian and Western markets due to high productivity and high quality in the performance of 2D/3D seismic acquisitions.

Shallow water seismic vessel Professor Rjabinkin is designed for operating in both deep and shallow water up to 5 m.

The deepwater vessels are strengthened ice class and shallow water vessel is of ice class. Most of vessels were built in Poland and Finland’s shipyards in 1986 to 1989.

M/V Akademik Primakov, purchased by SMNG in July 2017, was built in 1999 in Norway. In 2019, the ship underwent a five-year scheduled repair at the Tallinn Shipyard.

The marine operation department of SMNG provides our clients with survey design and exercises operating management of all phases of a marine seismic program.

SMNG has invested heavily in modernizing and upgrading its seismic fleet. In 2013 M/V Akademik Lazarev and M/V Akademik Nametkin have undergone essential modernization of navigation geophysical systems. After an upgrade the vessels’ seismic equipment consists of the advanced SEAL-428 system and the Sentinel SEAL 24 bit digital seismic solid streamers. Maximum length of active streamers is 12,000 m. Maximum volume source is 6,000 cu in. (4 lines with 8 air guns in each line). These vessels can provide High End services.

The seismic equipment of M/V Akademik Nemchinov consists of a Seal Digital System 24 bit and the Seal Fluid digital streamers (4 x 6,000 m) by Sercel. Maximum volume source is 8,000 cu in. (6 lines with 8 air guns in each line).

The M/V Professor Rjabinkin is a shallow water vessel (draft - 2.4 m). The vessel operates both in deep and shallow water. Her design/operational specifications and mobility make her quite unique. She is capable of arriving at the Azov, Black and Caspian Seas, Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas and also the Baltic Sea in 2-4 weeks via internal navigable routes in the European Russia. In 2013 M/V Professor Rjabinkin successfully operated in the Laptev Sea in ice-bound conditions.

Onboard all the vessels acquired seismic data is then QC-ed and processed on SGI Origin 2000, IBM RISC 6000, Sun ULTRA and Sun SPARC workstations running ProMax 2D/3D software.

In summer 2017 M/V Akademik Nemchinov, M/V Akademik Lazarev and M/V Akademik Nametkin underwent a 5-year class repair in Kaliningrad at the PREGOL shiprepair yard. Now the vessels have all the valid certificates and are ready for marine seismic exploration for the next 5 years.

In July 2017, as part of a consistent policy of modernization and renewal of the Russian seismic survey fleet carried out by ROSGEO, SMNG purchased a new 3D seismic vessel Akademik Primakov equipped with the modern navigation and geophysical Q-Marine complex. The vessel is capable of towing up to 16 seismic streamers, providing high daily productivity, which is extremely important for working during a short field season on the Arctic shelf. The purchase of M/V Akademik Primakov marked the beginning of a new stage in Russian marine exploration due to the possibility of using a high-tech vessel and equipment installed on it that does not have analogues in the Russian Federation.

JSC Sevmorneftegeofizika (SMNG), a part of Russian Geological Holding Rosgeologia has been successfully operating in the world market for 40 years and is the leader in marine geophysics of Russia. During this time, over 1 million km of 2D seismic data and about 50,000 sq. km of 3D seismic data were acquired worldwide. Marine geophysical surveys on the Arctic shelf of the Russian Federation, carried out by SMNG specialists, played a decisive role in assessing the prospects for oil and gas in the Arctic – about 500,000 line km of 2D and 20,000 sq.km of 3D data were acquired.
